The Hoover Dam
The Hoover DamHTC Touch Pro 2
The short drive to the Hoover Dam or the Boulder Dam as it was initially called isn't that interesting and to be honest the story of the Hoover Dam is more interesting than the place itself. Mind you a paddle on the shores or Lake Mead might have soothed our aching feet from yesterday but we passed on that. It's a huge structure and impressive but the tour that we went on wasn't up to much despite going from the top to the bottom via lift it almost felt rushed. 650ft+ of concrete at the base and complede in 4 years it powers millions of houses and gives drinking water to about 4 states. It appears impressive in figure form at the very least. Mind you the water line is dropping and if this continues it does make you wonder what they will do if Lake Mead runs dry.

So back we go heading for Ethel M's Chocolate factory. Built by Mr. Mars to provide handmade chocolates, it makes you wonder how exactly it fit into the whole history of Mars as nothing really explains. Short and sweet (no pun intended) it appears to serve more as a shop than anything else. So it was off to drive back down the Strip which as this time of day is a little like a slow moving car park, but we did see Stratosphere which we will have to go to so that we can see a bird's eye view of Las Vegas though I suspect no-one will be up for the fair ride at the top.

So Good They Named It Twice
So Good They Named It TwiceHTC Touch Pro 2
For those observant of you, well you don't have to be that observant, this isn't New York it's New York New York in Vegas where you can visit many mock countries in just one day so long as your feet hold out. Lots of walking and lot of heat make Zamyatin a tired boy and it's only 5pm a time when Las Vegas is just getting into the swing of things. As someone who likes to buck the trend we've gone for a rest in the hotel as it has been a long day. We might pop out later to see the lion enclosure at MGM or see the lifts that apparently go sideways at Luxor (I think someone was pulling my wife's leg or at least mixing Las Vegas up with Charlie and the Chocolate factory) but who knows.

Dream (or perhaps nightmare from the image)
Dream (or perhaps nightmare from the image)Pentax Optio 50
We travelled to see this sculpture last year, only to find that it wasn't finished. So we had a few hours to kill whilst our daughter was in rehearsals for a play. Luckily the sculpture is just outside in St Helens where the Sutton Manor Colliery used to be, the site apparently on a slag heap. Of course looking out onto the M62 it's obviously vying for a place in art history along side the Angel of the North. Personally I prefer the Angel of the North, this -whilst impressive- is just a white elongated head. Despite this there were plenty of visitors to the site, so it's not doing too bad for itself.

Needless to day the picture was taken looking up at the sculpture making it look very deformed. I was trying to get the head less elongated but by accident got the chin far too big to look normal.

What would have bee nice if there was more time would have been to look out for remnants of the pit which was supposed to be the largest in Lancashire, but it was back on the road to get Tea and pick up our daughter.

Malaga from Afar
Malaga from AfarMinolta X500
Nothing doing on the picture front. Just got my new phone connected to my works email so I suspect I shall be busy from now until... well a long time despite which I hope it will allow me to take the average sort of rubbish that you expect of this site hence the archive pic and not with the new piece of kit (which can be examined in the equipment area... yes it's an iPhone but better as far as I am concerned).

No this pic is quite old indeed in fact it pre-dates the site itself. It's a picture of Malaga and my Dad. I never really thought it was interesting until now but it does have this weird feeling about it because the perspective is all wrong and the focus is weird and the mist. I just like it and I hope you do too.

Castle Howard
Castle HowardJVC Everio GZ-MS100
Oh I just couldn't think of a funny pun for this. I must be loosing my touch.

So for Valentines day we went off to Castle Howard. Lodging in Kirkbymoorside which appears to have more pubs than houses it was almost like being in Ireland, or at least the Ireland that I have been used to just with no Irish people but no pubs for me, we hit the local Tandoori house, needless to say with Castle Howard on the agenda I hung back on the chilli lime pickle.

The weather was at least kind to us for the first half of the day. The day before wasn't so good and in the afternoon it was variable but now it was good and this is the house with a fountain of Atlas in the foreground.a
